The Hawk 3D provides
improved 2D acceleration for excellent Windows
applications performance and a full-featured
high-performance 3D rendering engine for games
and 3D applications using the S3 ViRGE/DXä graphics/video
accelerator.
The S3 ViRGE DXä
processor is equipped with a 170 MHz true-color
RAMDAC and an enhanced 64-bit graphic accelerator
core and built on the proven performance of the
previous ViRGE and ViRGE/Vxä
accelerators but improved with several advanced
engineering innovations, including better memory
band-width management, faster memory access and
higher memory clock support. Using the advanced
technology Streams Processor by S3, the Hawk 3D
improves the performance as well as the quality
of the softwares for full-screen playback of
Indeo and Cinepak movies. The Hawk 3D is fully
Microsoft Direct 3D compatible and offers a
full-featured set of 3D functions and effects
such as the bi-linear and tri-linear texture
filtering, depth cueing and fogging, alpha
blending, video texture mapping, Z-buffering,
MIP-Mapping, flat shading, Gouraud shading,
perspective correction.
The Hawk 3D is also equipped with the CGP Reality
95, a set of utilities which provides an advanced
quick and easy control of the displays
functions. This software features sophisticated
monitor adjustment tools to change resolution and
color depth on-the-fly, to modify any application
with the preferred video solution, and ensuring
the higher satisfaction for the users of the
California Graphics products.
The Hawk 3D uses EDO (Extended Data
Output) DRAM, a type of DRAM that is
faster than conventional DRAM which only allows
to read one byte at a time. EDO DRAM, in fact,
can copy an entire block of memory to its
internal cache. While the processor is accessing
this cache, the memory can collect a new block to
be send.
